Recogito is a web-based environment for collaborative semantic annotation, developed by the Pelagios initiative. Its open source software provides support for working with either text or image documents, including those served via the IIIF protocol. Originally the tool was designed for geographic annotation, i.e. the transcription, marking up and geo-resolving of maps and geographical texts (such as itineraries and travel reports) in the context of historical scholarship (e.g. to map or extract data from a source, or to prepare a digital edition). Over time, however, Recogito’s feature set has grown to provide more general annotation functionality, broadening the scope for further potential application areas.

For this sprint we will work with the second-century CE Periegesis ("Description of Greece") by Pausanias. Using Recogito, we will explore Pausanias' "thick" description of Greece's human landscape, paying particular attention to the mapping of spatial entities, the intersections of space and time, and the use of tags for organising a systematic analysis of the spatial form of, and the forms of space within, the text.

No knowledge of programming languages is required . The event should be of interest to linguists, archaeologists, historians, geographers, and heritage scholars, especially those interested in the history and culture of ancient world.

Recogito är ett webbaserat verktyg för kollaborativ semantisk annotering som är utvecklat av Pelagios Commons. Verktyget är skrivet i öppen källkod och möjliggör arbete med antingen text eller bilder, inklusive bilder via IIIF-protokollet. Det utvecklades ursprungligen för geospatial annotering och analys (t.ex. resebeskrivningar och extrahera data) men har utvecklats till att även stödja annotering av mer generellt slag vilket gör verktyget användbart för en bredare flora av forskningsprojekt.

På denna sprint kommer vi att arbeta med 100-talsgeografen Pausanias verk Periegesis tes Hellados (Rundresa i Grekland). Med hjälp av Recogito kommer vi att utforska Pausanias beskrivning av de grekiska landskapen och miljöerna, men särskilt fokus på att kartlägga rumsliga objekt, intersektioner mellan tid och rum och taggning för att kunan göra en systematisk analys av texten.

Ingen förkunskap om programmering krävs. Vi tror att evenemanget är av särskilt stort intresse för lingvister, arkeologer, historiker, geografer och kulturarvsvetare, i synnerhet de som är intresserade av antikens kultur och samhällsliv.
